I think the choice would be what you ant the most and if you are going to plant vegetables are you going to spend the time it takes to take care oft hem and is your family going to eat all you can produce. A lawn also takes a lot of care and a lot of water. If you live in a dry summer climate consider planting flowers and plants that are not going to take a lot of water. You can certainly plant a vegetable garden it can be quite rewarding but by selecting vegetable plants that are small growing you can plant a lot in a small space. Hope this gives you some ideas. You may be able to plant veg and flowers in the same yard depending on your space.

grass and flowers can adapt, but for veggie garden, you must have full sun all day… so that’s the choice maker….. if you don’t have the light, veggies won’t do well…..

It’s very difficult to give you an answer as there are several factors for you to consider – such as how much time do you want to spend working in your garden, how big is it, do you have children or pets, what climate do you have, do you get sun in the garden or is it shaded for all or part of the day, and so on. Vegetables and/or grass take up a lot of time, you may be better with shingle and pots.

Take a look around your neighbourhood and see what others have done with their gardens, and which of those you like, then knock on the door and ask for advice – most keen gardeners are only too happy to pass on their expertise
